Shock Wave Engine Design by Helmut E. Weber,

Shock Wave Engine Design by Helmut E. Weber,
Written by an author who has devoted the past twenty-five years of his life to studying and designing shock wave engines, this unique book offers comprehensive coverage of the theory and practice of shock wave engine design. The only book treating the complete preliminary design of shock wave engines, it provides engineers with practical step-by-step guidelines applicable to the design and construction of small, lightweight, low-powered industrial turbines as well as high performance jet aircraft engines. In his discussions of the advantages and disadvantages of shock wave versus other types of combustion engines, Dr. Weber demonstrates how and why shock wave engines can be made to work more efficiently than conventional gas turbines. Among other things, he shows quantitatively why combustion temperatures can be significantly higher in shock wave engines than conventional gas turbines. He evaluates temperatures of moving parts in terms of combustion and engine inlet temperatures, and explores the effect of shock coalescence, expansion fan reflections and intersections on port sizes and locations. And throughout, real and imagined performance problems are posed and proven solutions given for shock wave engines - alone and in conjunction with conventional gas turbines or reciprocating internal combustion engines. Designed to function as a practical guide, Shock Wave Engine Design offers concise step-by-step design techniques in a readily usable format. Engineers will find precise, detailed directions on such essentials as how to size wave rotor blade lengths and heights and the correct rotor diameter for a specified power, and material selection for rotor and stator. And one entirechapter (Chapter 12) is devoted exclusively to a detailed example design for a 500 hp engine.

No Safe Harbor: The Tragedy of the Dive Ship Wave Dancer
No Safe Harbor: The Tragedy of the Dive Ship Wave Dancer
Less than a month after September 11th, with the nation and world still deep in shock and mourning, Hurricane Iris, a category-four hurricane, gathered strength and speed in the Atlantic Ocean. On October 8, 2001, with winds of 140 miles per hour and a storm surge of fourteen feet, Iris hit Belize causing the worst disaster in the history of recreational diving. The Wave Dancer, a live-aboard dive boat, was torn from its moorings and tossed 150 yards, killing seventeen members of the Richmond (VA) Dive Club and three members of the crew. The ship's captain, a relative novice, had disregarded hurricane warnings, staying at sea longer than any of the other boats that day; when at last he tied up, he left the Wave Dancer dangerously exposed. At the peak of the storm, the tremendous pressure on the boat's moorings and the exposed hull led to the capsizing of the yacht. No SafeHarbor: The Tragedy of the Dive Ship Wave Dancer is a stirring account in the tradition of The Perfect Storm and Shadow Divers, as told by an eyewitness to the Wave Dancer's sad demise. In the years since, the question of who was at fault in the Wave Diver debacle has bitterly divided the diving community. Many place blame on the captain and his employer, the Peter Hughes Company, a major player in the live-aboard diving industry, for being reckless. Others have questioned the judgment of the divers who stayed on board, a perspective that infuriates the families of the dead and the surviving members of the Richmond Dive Club.

Shock wave - In a supersonic flow the compression of a nonreacting gas can be most simply modelled as an isentropic or Prandtl-Meyer compression, or as a shock wave. When an object (or disturbance) moves faster than the information about it can be propagated into the surrounding fluid, fluid near the disturbance cannot react or "get out of the way" before the disturbance arrives.

Death Pop - Death Pop is a loosely defined sub-genre of gothic rock, characterized by an emphasis on melody over spookiness and shock value. Strongly influenced by 80's New Wave artists such as New Order, The Cure, and Duran Duran, Death Pop the term was coined in 1995 by Erin Grooms, bass player for the Columbus, Ohio darkwave band Gossamer, in response to other genres of music which use the term death, such as death metal and death rock.

Hydrostatic shock - Hydrostatic shock is a theory of terminal ballistics that wounding effects are created by a shock wave in the tissues of the target. The term is meant to be a combination of hydrostatics with the (misnomer) effect of hydrodynamic shock.

Wave Race 64 - Wave Race 64 is a racing game for the Nintendo 64 that was released on November 5, 1996. In Wave Race 64 the player races on jet skis in many different weather conditions, on a variety of different courses.
